Best Online Ordering Systems for Small Coffee Shops

What is the best online ordering system for a small coffee shop?

It depends on your counter and how often your regulars come back. If you already run Square and want the lowest cost, Square’s ordering page is included on its $0 plan. If you want a full restaurant POS with online ordering from the same vendor, Toast fits, on a contract. If you want your own branded app on the entry plan, ChowNow includes one from $229 a month (billed annually) and Owner.com from $249 a month plus per-order fees. If you want your own app, loyalty and texting with the marketing done for you and Tap-to-Pay on your phone, GoTasty is $199–$399 a month plus a 1% platform fee. Prices as of October 2026.

How to choose an online ordering system for a coffee shop

  1. 1

Add up what each order really costs

Look past the monthly price: a per-order fee, a fee added to the customer’s bill and the card processing rate all come out of a $6 latte. On 1,000 online orders a month at $12, a 5% fee is $600; 1% is $120.

  2. 2

    Start from your counter

If you’re happy with your POS, pick something that works with it. If you’re choosing a POS too, Square and Toast bundle online ordering with their own; if you don’t want POS hardware at all, Tap-to-Pay on a phone can be your checkout.

  3. 3

Make order-ahead fast for the morning rush

Regulars want “my usual” in a couple of taps and a pickup time they can trust. Saved orders, scheduled pickup and Apple Pay matter more for coffee than a long menu.

  4. 4

Choose loyalty that fits daily visits

Coffee is a habit, so loyalty should reward frequent small orders, online and in person, with a reward you set. Check whether loyalty and texting are on the plan you’re pricing or an upgrade.

  5. 5

Decide if you need your own app

A mobile ordering page is enough to start. Your own App Store app is worth it once regulars order weekly; check which plan includes it, and remember Apple charges its own $99 a year for the developer account it’s published under.

  6. 6

Read the contract and setup terms

Month-to-month or an annual term? Is there a setup fee, a cancellation notice period or an early termination fee? These are often on a help page or the merchant agreement rather than the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the cheapest way for a coffee shop to take online orders?

Square’s online ordering page is included on its $0 Square Free plan, with online card payments at 3.3% + 30¢ (as of October 2026). Loyalty and text marketing need a paid Square plan from $49 a month per location.

Do I need my own app, or is an ordering website enough?

A website is enough to start taking orders: every option here works in a phone’s browser. An app earns its place when regulars order several times a week, because it lives on their home screen and puts their usual order and loyalty points a tap away. Owner.com and ChowNow include a branded app on every plan, GoTasty on Pro, Toast as an add-on, and Square doesn’t offer one of its own.

Which of these charge a fee on every order?

GoTasty charges a 1% platform fee. Owner.com’s Flexible plan charges the restaurant 5% per order, and on both of its plans guests pay a 5% order support fee. Square and Toast charge no commission on orders from your own ordering page, and ChowNow says its orders are commission-free with its Profit Protector setting on. Card processing applies on all of them (as of October 2026).

Can I keep my POS?

Square Online and Toast online ordering belong to their own POS. ChowNow connects to 20+ POS systems, Owner.com connects to Clover, Square, Toast and others, and GoTasty syncs with Square and Clover or runs without a POS using Tap-to-Pay on your phone.

What should a coffee shop’s loyalty program look like?

Something a customer earns on every visit, online or at the counter, with a reward close enough to feel reachable, like a free drink after about ten. Check that the system lets you choose the reward and that in-person purchases earn points too. Our loyalty program guide walks through the setup.
